Building Confidence During Your Surgical Journey Undergoing surgery can be a challenging and overwhelming experience. From the uncertainty of the procedure to the anxiety about the recovery process, it's natural to feel a range of emotions. However, building confidence during your surgical journey is essential for a positive outcome. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of confidence and how the Surgery Support Life Coach can help you achieve it. 1. Understand the Process: One of the first steps in building confidence is to educate yourself about your surgical process. It is helpful to know what a surgery was like for others and/or bring a list of questions to your doctor. I have created a "Pre-Op list of questions you may not have thought of" to help fill in the gaps.
2. Open, Loose Expectations: Surgery itself is a hopeful act, we are hoping for a change for the better. While it's natural to hope for a smooth surgery and recovery, it's also essential to be prepared for potential challenges along the way. If we set definitive, rigid expectations for ourselves we are likely setting ourselves up for anger and disappointment. Remember there is not only one path to a happy, adventurous life. 3. Manage Anxiety: Anxiety is a common emotion before and after surgery. Anxiety has many root causes that we can unearth together in the coaching sessions. Surgery is a high-stakes trust fall, for some of us the most intense one we have yet been through. However, anxiety is not a guaranteed emotion, you don't have to go in suffering from fear and anxiety. Patients who are calm and confident before surgery report less pain, fewer complications and a better overall experience. 4. Create a Support System: Surrounding yourself with a strong support system can make a world of difference in building confidence. I can help you identify and communicate your needs to your loved ones, ensuring that you have the support you need during your recovery. Additionally, our online coaching sessions provide a safe space for you to express your concerns and fears. 5. Celebrate Small Wins: Building confidence is a gradual process, and it's important to celebrate your achievements along the way. I will help you recognize and appreciate your progress, no matter how small. I remember how great my first shower felt post-op. By acknowledging your accomplishments, you'll boost your self-esteem and motivation. 6. Remember you are whole person: Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is crucial during your surgical journey. You are not just a wounded, healing body part. Planning ahead for nutritious meals, (limited) physical movement and conversations with friends are just as important as changing the bandages. By prioritizing self-care, you'll enhance your overall well-being and confidence. Remember, you don't have to face your surgical journey alone.
